Sunday May 3, 1970: Under the direction of President Richard Nixon, and then Ohio Governor Jim Rhodes, Ohio National Guard were called to Kent State University where students protesting the Vietnam War were taking place. This call to action by Nixon took place after the ROTC building adjacent to the Student Commons was burnt to the ground that evening, with well over 1000 demonstrators surrounding the building.
